Hi Cindy:

In response to your question I think it is important to define your target audience very clearly. This targeting, also taken into account a survey,  has helped us at CCLFI with developing a knowledge management practitioners course. It’s duration is about 6-8 months with 3 months theory and background on KM concepts, business cases, and 3-4 months in which the students select an organizational topic that can be solved or addressed through a KM solution. In the attached course brochure you can view the learning processes and outcomes; 10 KM lessons and the 30 basic km skills students will master. Maybe this overview gives you an idea on the flow and content.

My biggest mistakes in teaching KM have been around trying to do too much and making things too complex.  So, I'm going back to where I started this message.  You need to start with the students/participants and where they are.  Until you know who they are, how much they already know (or don't know) and why they are in the class, it's difficult to tell where to start and what to cover.  Make it as real, concrete, and practical as possible.  KM can be presented as a fluffy thing with a lot of kumbaya around the value of knowledge sharing and there are so many KM tools and techniques to present that it easily becomes overwhelming.

Thank you, Roxana.  Sounds like you are doing well with yours.  Most of my KM engagements have been geared towards operational excellence, but a lot of the feedback I’ve had is about wanting to know how to use KM to improve prevention of knowledge loss and knowledge sharing.  I am going to stay away from KPIs for this course.  I would love to talk about this once I get further down the road because I think we could help each other talk through what we are seeing.

on your slide 4 there needs to be a whole new branch on response effectiveness.  we need collect intelligence on the impact of models (especially using new models that aren't really developed fully) media coverage, impact and effectiveness of lock downs, impact on social structures (i.e. that we discovered that schools prevent hunger in kids and detect child abuse, impact of worship practices, impact on socialization practices (dating, shopping, sports), economic impact (unemployment, production, etc.) hunt for teatments and vaccines, etc.  I think this is much more valuable intelligence than what's listed.....murray jennex

Sharing the 2020 Human Capital trends from Deloitte with a trend focused on knowledge management which was great to see called out!  I think it has some great insights around how we as knowledge management professionals can provide value to our organizations.  While technology is making knowledge management more efficient, the ability to tie knowledge efforts to action and creating knowledge to jump start innovations and launch new products and services is where the value lies but it's a big gap today (82% of respondents said their organizations can do better at this). The more we can do to address the gap the more value we show to the business.  Efforts like curating best content to support client teams around the COVID response, capturing stories of how we are showing up for our clients and helping them respond during this crisis,  leveraging community to crowdsource ideas to specific business challenges to come up with ideas for new products/services are a few examples.    You can find the full report here, the KM chapter here.
