Hey Rory,
I agree with Bart to speak with the end-users. At the end the intranet is useful only if it is used and it is the personification of people's work (the IT team is just a facilitator here). I

SharePoint is a pretty easy to use extranet. If you set it up properly from the start, then it's a good km tool. Takes time though and architecture design.
