Zombie Knowledge Update

Patrick Lambe

Dear colleagues,

About a year ago we had a discussion about “zombie knowledge” and Tim Wood Powell and I both did sessions at KM World on the topic. Past discussion thread at https://sikm.groups.io/g/main/topic/88388807#10047

I’ve just done an updated version of my KM World talk for ISKO Singapore, and the recording and session materials are available at

And here’s a link to Tim Wood Powell’s blog post on the topic post-KM World.

I participated in such a conversation. The details are in a thread about the KM View of AI.  Also see the earlier posts in this thread about KM and AI.

Marc Belsher

Dear Fellow Members:

In my humble opinion, AI in general (and ChatGPT in specific) is a significant disruptor, but I don’t think AI implies the end of KM.  AI is not human and may never understand us as individual complex minds forever seeking wisdom.  My goal with each engagement (KM or otherwise) is to maximize participation of the people in the process and minimize resistance to change (minimize fear).  Is AI able to minimize resistance to change, or will it only enhance it – I wonder, and time will tell?

In the words of Roger Von Oech, “There are two basic rules in life; change is inevitable, and everybody resists change (fears change).”  AI use in KM is inevitable, and there is certainly value, especially in the Data, Information, Knowledge part of the journey, but will it deliver the Big W (wisdom)?  I for one doubt it.  As humans, we have a reactive brain, which is 80% of who we are, and our brain defaults to that reactive place always.  We want the people that create knowledge content to be in their active brain, performing executive functions, having fabulous HUMAN thoughts and producing great outputs that truly improve the enterprise condition, drive positive change and deliver ultimate wisdom.

I for one would like to see AI solve our biggest industry challenge, fix the failure problem.  As you know, it is estimated that between 50% and 75% of KM efforts fail, often because the human domain does not accept and often fully resists change.  How might AI be utilized to improve these terrible metrics?

So far from my limited perspective, it feels like AI is more a blunt tool rather than a precision instrument for good.

My 2 cents…

Marc

I’ve decided to let the three main platforms entertain each other. 😃

I’ve got the Microsoft Edge plugin, Google Bard, and ChatGPT cued-up and am giving each of them something to do throughout the day. I’m finding the ability to draft and light-edit things by feeding them into one of the three to be easy and productive. So far, the AI chat tools are great collaborators to help get things done quicker. Someone has to feed them – so deciding what work they can do, feeding it in, and then taking the output and polishing it is the extend of what we have so far. It’s like having a really speedy intern (without the nose piercings).

The GfWM (German Society for KM) has published a new dossier on KM Essentials, you can read the articles here https://www.gfwm.de/dossier-kmessentials/ there are several articles in English, including one from me, and you should be able to run Google Translate on the page (if you’re using Chrome) for each article and have it translate the German articles into English (or your preferred language).

Stan Garfield

Today we held our 211th monthly call. Thanks to Bart for presenting, to those who posted in the chat, and to all those who attended. Please continue the discussion here by replying to this thread. Here are the details of the call.
Group Chat

*Tim Powell*, 3/21/2023 8:00 AM: And worth waiting for!

*Andrew Trickett*, 3/21/2023 8:31 AM: Did it change behaviours as people tend to go to people they trust to have a high level of experience. Also did it provide the organisation with a way to identify key gaps or future gaps as people retire.

*Tim Powell*, 3/21/2023 8:32 AM: Bart, Initially you said that innovation was a goal. of this initiative.  Did you measure that, and did it result?

*Tim Powell*, 3/21/2023 8:35 AM: Thanks, got it!

*Tim Powell*, 3/21/2023 8:38 AM: 1/6th of your expert base participated.  Any idea why?

*Joitske Hulsebosch*, 3/21/2023 8:38 AM: Did the experts see it as a loss?

*Joitske Hulsebosch*, 3/21/2023 8:39 AM: (less questions, less recognition?)

*Tim Powell*, 3/21/2023 8:40 AM: Thank you.

*Mary Chitty*, 3/21/2023 8:40 AM: how much effort was the deduping of the knowledge topics?  did you add cross references?

*Joitske Hulsebosch*, 3/21/2023 8:41 AM: great

*Tim Powell*, 3/21/2023 8:45 AM: You used self-rating of level of expertise.  Was there any attempt to verify and/or normalize this?

*Mary Chitty*, 3/21/2023 8:47 AM: but some very new people might not be known experts

*Tim Powell*, 3/21/2023 8:47 AM: Endorsements, OK, great.

*Andrew Trickett*, 3/21/2023 8:47 AM: I think a key bit around self rating is knowing you might  be called out on it. We've found some cultures under sell themselves some over rate. A good way is to use technical COPs to take a sample and review as well as the endorsements

*Valdis Krebs*, 3/21/2023 8:50 AM: You need to look at both knowledge level of, AND access/availability to that knowledge/person.  Maybe X is not the BEST expert  but s/he is available to discuss the problem/solution and is helpful

*Tim Powell*, 3/21/2023 8:51 AM: Dunning-Kruger effect

*Valdis Krebs*, 3/21/2023 8:51 AM: When doing Organizational Network Analysis we NEVER ask for self-assessments

*Valdis Krebs*, 3/21/2023 8:54 AM: Often top experts do not like talking to newbies -- need to find the knowledge translators in the organization

*Valdis Krebs*, 3/21/2023 8:56 AM: No questions, just sharing experience... thank you Bart!

*James BICKHAM*, 3/21/2023 9:00 AM: Thank you!

*Tim Powell*, 3/21/2023 9:00 AM: Terrific, Bart, thanks!

*Joitske Hulsebosch*, 3/21/2023 9:00 AM: thanks!

KM and AI: Use cases now and in the future? #methods #AI #tools

This looks very interesting indeed. LinkedIn
Microsoft's Copilot is basically chatGPT in the MS Suite. It's here (well, you never know with MS when things actually appear in your estate, but you get what I mean!)...
Does anyone know how it will be deployed and what sort of training there will be on it?

Looking for a Service Agreement Template #request

One of our members is looking for a template or service agreement form for services to be delivered from the U.S. to Saudi Arabia. An example containing terms related to government, currency, liabilities, or any other relevance to US to SA business. Some parameters to start from would be super helpful. Thanks for anything you can provide.

Re: KM and Quality #quality

Hi Patricia,

Out of interest, since both ISO 9001 and ISO 30401 are Annex SL management standards, is your intent to integrate the official KM standard into your overall quality management system? Why / why not?

Cheers,
Stephen.

Hi all,

In your experience at your companies, what has been the relationship between KM and quality (be it a QA/QC team, quality system, quality manual etc)? What role does KM play in quality and vice versa?

My company (and AEC firm) has been ISO 9001 certified for a while, but formalized KM is relatively new. We are beginning to explore how and where KM and quality intersect.

Any thoughts, examples, cautions, musings are welcome!

Thank you,

Re: Benchmarking of Digital Experience Platforms #assessment #hot-topics #dex

Amit Dhania

Hi James,

The backstory is that we have Drupal as the web content management system that is a piece of Acquia's DXP, while we also have some Adobe and Salesforce products implemented. I appreciate that all of these are very different products and all of them are pitching themselves as DXPs from different angles.

The question that we are looking to answer is (and that we have enough information to justify the decision)
  • do we want to continue with an open-source platform (and take on associated component porting/upgrade/maintenance costs every time there's a version upgrade), while thinking about the DXP features going forward? OR,
  • do we invest in a proprietary premium-priced platform (with personalised customer journey, multi-experience support, and similar DXP capabilities) with a steep learning curve, high total ownership cost, and an elongated time to value, and leave the upgrade and maintenance to the vendor.
I agree that an in-person/virtual conversation will be very useful. If you can send me a quick email at a.dhania@..., I will organise a time and invite relevant parties from my end. In the meantime, I will look at Real Story Group [thanks for the lead :-)].

Cheers,
Amit

Hi everyone,

Hello from Australia :-) I'm a Solutions Analyst with The University of Queensland, and I'm doing a light-touch benchmarking of the current market leaders in the field of Digital Experience Platforms (DXP). The top players that I'm looking at are Acquia, Adobe, and Salesforce. Having reviewed some of the public research materials (Gartner Magic Quadrant for Digital Experience Platforms 2022), solution provider's content (blogs, product pages, and support documentation), and public user reviews on comparison sites, I can say I have a rough idea of where these three players stack up.

Has anyone done a similar exercise and can provide some insight into where each or any one of these stands when looking at the following aspects of DXPs:

  • Search (native and partner-solution) and navigation
  • Account services, or security and access control
  • collaboration and knowledge sharing
  • integration and interoperability
  • low-code / no-code experience building for users and designers
Thanks in advance,

Hi Amit,

Those are three extremely different products (and types of products) that you're looking at there!

I know things are pretty blurred in a uni, but are you looking at customer/prospective student websites (etc), or staff/current student collaboration tools and intranets? Probably best not to try to get both in the same tool...

I've been in this space a very long time now, and have helped quite a few Australian unis over the years pick suitable technologies (by helping them through an effective go-to-market process). Very happy to have a more detailed chat on the phone if that would help?

I'd also point you to the work done by Real Story Group in this space, which is the most credible source of practical (non marketing) advice you can get anywhere. (Not being impolite to anyone, but I would put them _way_ ahead of Gartner and Forrester.)

Cheers,
James

Re: KM and Quality #quality

Chris Collison

Hi Patricia,

Quality Systems and Improvement are well articulated and standardised, and can be represented as maturity models (e.g. EFQM). Love ‘em or hate ‘em, the common language in a model provides you with an opportunity to do some ‘benchlearning’ across different parts of your company – and hence a way to discover pockets of excellence and capture the story behind them, connect ‘offers and requests’ to mobilise knowledge, potentially build a Quality Community of Practice, and have a way to measure improvement.

In your shoes, I'd be looking at the following steps:

i)                    Choose (or build your own) maturity model which describes QC/QA/QI capability.

ii)                   Engage teams in using it as a self-assessment, collect their current levels and their priorities for improvement.

iii)                 Create a dashboard to show the spread and visualise where the ‘best in company’ examples lie. (A River Diagram or a heatmap works well for this)

iv)                 Support a knowledge marketplace to connect ‘gives and gets’ between different SMMA teams.

v)                   Consider a Community of Practice as a supportive environment for all of the above.

vi)                 Consider creating a toolkit/board game/work mat to bring the self-assessment approach to life.

vii)               Use the spread and the average of each measure on your maturity model as a KPIs for impact and transfer.

Hope this helps.  There’s a worked example here from the UK’s National Health Service

Kind regards,

Chris

Subject: [SIKM] KM and Quality

Thank you,
Patricia
