Tim Powell
Hi Ryan,
“The future ain’t what it used to be,” as the great American “philosopher” Yogi Berra noted.
We are indeed at an inflection – but then, we always are! I first became aware of this when Alvin Toffler’s revelatory book Future Shock came out -- a nearly four decades ago! https://www.amazon.com/Future-Shock-Alvin-Toffler/dp/0553277375/ref=sr_1_1?crid=QX72R18GI0OS&keywords=future+shock&qid=1680106444&s=books&sprefix=future+shock%2Cstripbooks%2C83&sr=1-1 I later recall reading that the ancient Greeks were worried about more or less the same thing – so perhaps it’s a perpetual condition of humanity.
As you’ve said, data, knowledge, information, and intelligence – whether organic or artificial – are measurably moving faster – and accelerating. It’s likely that’s what causing our feeling that the future is rushing toward us. Experientially, each of us eight billion earthlings has to process exponentially more information in the finite time we have. (At least, the two-thirds of us connected to the internet.) Sure, advanced tools help with this – but our cognitive power tools are advancing faster than our brains are evolving to comprehend the results – which are ultimately the controlling factor.
The good news is that humans are resilient, adaptive, and (dare I say) intelligent – it is possible to use this enhanced knowledge to sense and respond faster! An obvious example is the unprecedented speed with which the high effective covid mRNA vaccines were developed. Big problem, big solution – in record time.
Regards,
Tim

Hi Tim,
I see we are at this inflection point again, where the speed of Value Ecosystem change is faster than anyone thought possible. I literally mean almost anyone, and the proverbial ‘we’ is humanity, not just knowledge workers. GPT-4 and others soon to follow will create a step-scale escalation in development of available knowledge. I tend to think that any reference to AI and KM to date in as far as solutions or specific applications could, or will be considered classic AI. Where as Generative AI will be/is the modern AI.
As an interesting activity, look at the google search analytics for Generative AI! - That is the popularity of the term in the public perspective, driven by lighting fast moves by Microsoft and OpenAI.

Re: Chemonics International is seeking a Senior KM Specialist in DC

Barbara Fillip
Thank you for sharing the position announcement to this group. Happy to chat with any interested parties. In my experience, it is not always easy to find the right fit for a KM position. This one requires an interesting mix of technical skills (not coding) and people skills to help connect and collect. On the collect/curate side of things, we manage a key SharePoint-based project document library, but it's not a SharePoint administrator task, so that part of the job is really about either a) creating the right incentives, therefore working with key business stakeholders, to ensure that processes for uploading to the library are followed, and/or b) working on a technology solution to automate the upload process and curation of these documents. Oh.. and we're adding photos to the Library, which brings in a different flavor of complexity. On the connecting side, the KM team is responsible for the corporate Yammer/Viva Engage network of communities. It's working well, but could do better, especially in terms of how our technical practices (internal communities of practice) are using it. There is always room for improvement. Then we are testing Viva Topics, which is fun in spite of the challenges and helps us understand how AI and knowledge graphs can fit in for some KM applications. The KM team at the enterprise level (that's me and this new position) is located in the Office of the CEO within a broader team that includes a Data & Analytics team and an Innovation team. We work closely with our IT colleagues who focus on strengthening our IT infrastructure and information architecture, laying foundations for AI applications. This is a great time to join as we are about to launch the new 2023-2028 corporate strategy which gives KM a central role. I don't expect the KM team to grow much in size, but I do expect its influence and impact to grow as it will be well positioned to work closely with top leadership yet connecting well with the business lines. I hope this provides a little more context for the job description. Dear Patrick,
I’m glad to finally be able to see your terrific presentation! I agree with all you’ve said – and find it doubly interesting that we developed our complementary approaches independently of each other.
Thanks for the references to my work. And here’s yet another, from the onset of the pandemic, wherein I discuss how these value pivots might be engaged: https://timwoodpowell.com/value-pivots/ I argue (as you’ve also said) that knowledge can and should be a facilitator in such shifts – not an impediment, which in practice it too often is.
Having worked for decades in corporate strategic intelligence, this value dynamics is a topic that has long fascinated me – while providing me with a nice livelihood. Yes, Kodak versus Fuji is the posterchild for this kind of capabilities rigidity. What’s ironic there is that Kodak owned the earliest patents on digital technology – and yet chose not to commercialize them, until their lead had been permanently lost. I have it from inside sources that their senior leadership saw digital coming – but underestimated the speed at which it would become dominant. They were, in effect, perpetually betting that it would not be a critical issue on their watch.
I believe that our inability to estimate the speed of “value ecosystem” change is among our core challenges. We (as a species) tend think change will happen later – and will happen to them, not to us – and when it does, change will be incremental and/or linear in nature. Each of these illusions leaves plenty of room for disastrous miscalculation.
I see examples of this constantly. I was reading just this morning that one factor in the current problem with Silicon Valley Bank here in the US is that regulators did not take into account the speed at which uninsured depositors would move their money out. The formal risk models being used (or mental models, at least) assumed customers’ having to physically go to a branch and/or use an ATM – whereas now, much of this happens by mobile phone – in this case causing a digital run on the bank.
Sorry for the long response -- but I tend to get wound up on this. I’m so looking forward to your new book!
Cheers,
Tim

This podcast episode is a great summary of the current state of AI if you want to get a better understanding of how large language models and other forms of AI work. The host Sean Carroll is a theoretical physicist but his podcast explores a wide range of topics, usually by finding the academics who are doing cutting-edge research in a particular field. I find the conversations just about right for me, not too technical but not too watered-down, somewhere around the "Scientific American level" of science communication.

Marc Belsher
Dear Fellow Members:
In my humble opinion, AI in general (and ChatGPT in specific) is a significant disruptor, but I don’t think AI implies the end of KM. AI is not human and may never understand us as individual complex minds forever seeking wisdom. My goal with each engagement (KM or otherwise) is to maximize participation of the people in the process and minimize resistance to change (minimize fear). Is AI able to minimize resistance to change, or will it only enhance it – I wonder, and time will tell?
In the words of Roger Von Oech, “There are two basic rules in life; change is inevitable, and everybody resists change (fears change).” AI use in KM is inevitable, and there is certainly value, especially in the Data, Information, Knowledge part of the journey, but will it deliver the Big W (wisdom)? I for one doubt it. As humans, we have a reactive brain, which is 80% of who we are, and our brain defaults to that reactive place always. We want the people that create knowledge content to be in their active brain, performing executive functions, having fabulous HUMAN thoughts and producing great outputs that truly improve the enterprise condition, drive positive change and deliver ultimate wisdom.
I for one would like to see AI solve our biggest industry challenge, fix the failure problem. As you know, it is estimated that between 50% and 75% of KM efforts fail, often because the human domain does not accept and often fully resists change. How might AI be utilized to improve these terrible metrics?
So far from my limited perspective, it feels like AI is more a blunt tool rather than a precision instrument for good.
My 2 cents…

So far, the AI chat tools are great collaborators to help get things done quicker. Someone has to feed them – so deciding what work they can do, feeding it in, and then taking the output and polishing it is the extend of what we have so far. Also did it provide the organisation with a way to identify key gaps or future gaps as people retire. *Tim Powell*, 3/21/2023 8:32 AM: Bart, Initially you said that innovation was a goal. of this initiative. Did you measure that, and did it result? *Tim Powell*, 3/21/2023 8:35 AM: Thanks, got it! *Tim Powell*, 3/21/2023 8:38 AM: 1/6th of your expert base participated. We've found some cultures under sell themselves some over rate. A good way is to use technical COPs to take a sample and review as well as the endorsements *Valdis Krebs*, 3/21/2023 8:50 AM: You need to look at both knowledge level of, AND access/availability to that knowledge/person. Hi all, I wanted to share that IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development, a specialized UN agency) is looking for a French-speaking KM expert to support a project in Cameroon. It involves guiding the implementation of a recently developed knowledge management strategy. The work would be remote as well as face-to-face support in Cameroon according to a schedule to be agreed. If you are interested, or know someone, please shoot me an email ( a.boersma@... ) and I can share the terms of reference and connect you to the hiring team. Many thanks, Arno |
