I'd disagree with the obsolete comment. It's become the cornerstone of Viva with Teams providing the single pane of glass. Investment continues. Benchmarking studies like SWOOPs show many organisations are taking advantage of it. If anything, it may have a
future whereby it is not overtly evident that you are using Yammer but you will be. Microsoft are clearly on a assimilation path and we will see products being relegated to becoming features with Teams as the window into the Microsoft world.
For information around 40% of our staff actively use Yammer which we feel is pretty good and compares well with others.

Hi Kim,
In my previous company, as KM responsible, the previous KM manager and I have implemented the Yammer in the CoP environment.
If in 2015/2018, this tool was for me very exciting (co-edition and very simple), it was not a huge success. People were stuck to Outlook !!! They considered Yammer as a Social media and not a professional tools
Today, TEAMS has taken over Yammer !!!
Conclusion: very good tool but low success and now nearly obsolete.
Kind regards

Hi Kim, I have experienced the same problem as Alexandre; we have Yammer but only around 10-20% of our staff body regularly engage with it. Most, including our Community of Practice, use Teams; however, our Teams are currently private for invited members only, so it is much harder to collaborate across the organisation and get interested staff into the right Teams area. We are hoping to change this soon, but in the meantime I have been asked on occasion for a company-wide version of Teams by members of staff who refuse to use Yammer! The recent update to Yammer has made it much harder to engage across channels serendipitously, with the Home page not pulling in new content from channels particularly well. As mentioned before, we hope to open up our Teams for easier collaboration as well as potentially introducing Viva Topics down the line... We use Yammer for our Communities of Practice.
Navigation and identity - we try to give them a distinctive brand. For example:
Using specific icons or swooshes helps them stand out.
Sharing across communities - We use topics as the glue (we also use topics to join people to Yammer communities). We make data available that allows community leaders to use data to discover and reconnect disconnected conversations. Community leaders also trace through conversations, keeping the momentum going etc. Search is also a powerful ally as it uses the icons. Having a snappy strapline helps as it is in the search results.
Customisation of the community home - We let communities manage their visual identity and they know it is limited to what Yammer allow. We certainly do not build custom pages and then add Yammer feeds to them.
We have built light touch integration. It uses our taxonomy to connect likeminded people to Yammer communities, provides associated SharePoint Hub sites, and knowledge sharing capabilities in SharePoint that augment business processes. We also use Microsoft Viva to enhance the knowledge management experience.
We are not a big company - only 17,000 people and we do not have dedicated KM functions.

Re: November 2022 SIKM Call: Arthur Shelley - Becoming Adaptable: the art of creative facilitation to develop individuals and collective capabilities and to share knowledge
#monthly-call
On Monday we held our 207th monthly call. Thanks to Arthur for presenting, to those who spoke up and posted in the chat, and to all those who attended. Please continue the discussion here by replying to this thread. Here are the details of the call:
From Barbara Fillip to Everyone 04:05 PM Sounds related to a session I attended on Saturday on permanence and impermanence.... perhaps a different angle/perspective. From connie.smith to Everyone 04:13 PM I really like this visual, and I feel like I engage in this regularly at my level in the institution, but there is such a disconnect with the upper administration. How do you bridge that gap? Thanks! From Arno Boersma to Everyone 04:13 PM Likewise, Arthur. Pleasure to reconnect. From connie.smith to Everyone 04:14 PM That would be great, I'll definitely email you! From Madelyn Blair to Everyone 04:14 PM What I like about this is that the skills involved depend on the ones before. From John Hovell (he, his) to Everyone 04:17 PM And no doubt a tie to storytelling/-thinking/-feeling/-listening, right Madelyn and John? From Madelyn Blair to Everyone 04:19 PM @john Hovell, yes, great metaphor! From John Lewis Ed.D. to Everyone 04:20 PM Nice connection, and I agree John, all roads lead to story. From Heather Fox to Everyone 04:24 PM B From connie.smith to Everyone 04:24 PM C From John Lewis Ed.D. to Everyone 04:24 PM E From Stan Garfield to Everyone 04:24 PM D From Rachel Teague, Ed.D (she/hers) to Everyone 04:24 PM D From Arno Boersma to Everyone 04:24 PM D From Ibrahim Diallo to Everyone 04:24 PM B From Bart Verheijen to Everyone 04:24 PM E From Linda Blevins, NSF (she/her) to Everyone 04:24 PM C From Madelyn Blair to Everyone 04:24 PM D From murray jennex to Everyone 04:24 PM e From Patricia Michalski to Everyone 04:24 PM B From Tom Short-San Francisco to Everyone 04:24 PM d From Diana Russo to Everyone 04:25 PM D From Barbara Fillip to Everyone 04:25 PM C. I expect uncertainty to be a given. From Tom Short-San Francisco to Everyone 04:26 PM (would love to analyze this data set - by age? by occupation?) From John Hovell (he, his) to Everyone 04:26 PM (Race, gender, nationality) From murray jennex to Everyone 04:26 PM e, 66, professor From Madelyn Blair to Everyone 04:30 PM Adaptability is about resilience. We have always been a resilient species. From Bart Verheijen to Everyone 04:31 PM Consistency is expected from others, very much so from politicians. That makes them fixed and not adaptable anymore From murray jennex to Everyone 04:33 PM that is too simple, consistency in belief is welcome, this may cause inconsistent behavior but if consistent in belief and principles that is okay From connie.smith to Everyone 04:38 PM So important to interact respectfully to encourage more collaboration, rather than being made to 'feel stupid' for saying things you may think are interesting/important. From Madelyn Blair to Everyone 04:39 PM Connie, indeed, making others feel stupid is a great way to shut down communication altogether. Mutual respect is the treatment. From connie.smith to Everyone 04:40 PM Too true! Hard to convey simply why KM is so interesting/challenging/exciting -- in my opinion! From John Hovell (he, his) to Everyone 04:41 PM Art, love your thoughts as always. I’m still processing the first DNA strand “acknowledge differences”. I wonder if there’s “realize self” up there too? Seems so important (and challenging) From connie.smith to Everyone 04:41 PM Agree, John! Good point! From John Hovell (he, his) to Everyone 04:42 PM Thanks Connie :) From Madelyn Blair to Everyone 04:42 PM John, so much begins with real self-knowledge. From John Lewis Ed.D. to Everyone 04:43 PM Great point Art, perspective drives perception. From connie.smith to Everyone 04:43 PM This reminds me of the 5 blind men explaining their understanding of what an elephant is from their location at the elephant, from Socrates. From Madelyn Blair to Everyone 04:44 PM Excellent article from NYT this morning speaks to the perspectives and how they prevent us from seeing the real connections between perspectives. You can find it here. From connie.smith to Everyone 04:45 PM Important to reiterate what you interpreted another to have said, to clarify that you understood what they were saying and so they know you understand as they said it. From John Hovell (he, his) to Everyone 04:46 PM It’s when you make someone else’s perspective “wrong” or “excluded” where there’s noticeable impact… it’s in the relationship and conversational awareness? From Tom Short-San Francisco to Everyone 04:47 PM @Madelyn - I read that too and thought it was a fascinating perspective. From John Hovell (he, his) to Everyone 04:48 PM +1 Connie :) From connie.smith to Everyone 04:48 PM The level of trust in those 'managing' the protocols was, in my opinion, a HUGE effect of the taking mindset. From connie.smith to Everyone 04:52 PM Sounds like you're talking more about moderation, which is sorely lacking in this current culture, unfortunately. From Madelyn Blair to Everyone 04:53 PM +1 Connie From Madelyn Blair to Everyone 04:58 PM John Seely Brown said that innovation occurs in the white spaces between disciplines. From John Lewis Ed.D. to Everyone 04:59 PM Art, seems like it requires curiosity but how do you generate more curiosity? From Madelyn Blair to Everyone 05:00 PM @John Lewis, curiosity can be nurtured by asking questions, by watching a child explore, and lots more. From John Hovell (he, his) to Everyone 05:00 PM Thanks Arthur!! From Bart Verheijen to Everyone 05:00 PM Thanks Arthur! From Tom Short-San Francisco to Everyone 05:00 PM Curiosity exists when there is no fear. From Madelyn Blair to Everyone 05:00 PM Thanks, Art, very enjoyable conversation. From connie.smith to Everyone 05:00 PM This was really interesting! Thank you, Arthur! From John Lewis Ed.D. to Everyone 05:00 PM Thanks Arthur! From Arno Boersma to Everyone 05:00 PM So much food for thought! Thanks, Arthur. From Tom Short-San Francisco to Everyone 05:01 PM thanks, Arthur. cheers From Ibrahim Diallo to Everyone 05:01 PM thank you Arthur and Stan From Diana Russo to Everyone 05:01 PM Thank you! |

November 2022 SIKM Call: Arthur Shelley - Becoming Adaptable: the art of creative facilitation to develop individuals and collective capabilities and to share knowledge
#monthly-call
Hello SIKM Leaders,
Here is the link to the video recording for my Becoming Adaptable session yesterday: https://youtu.be/8ZCFlAI4-wE It is an hour, so longer than most people are prepared to watch, so I suggest browse. We covered 4 “Collaborative Conversation Spirals” on the topics:
More specific insights on these topics can be found is the series of short videos in the “Instant Insights” playlist found here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLeqsNgzJnPotjBhDeLlScZrflDM4n-W1f These are effective “Conversation starters” in education and corporate environments to engage people in sharing perspectives on important topics.
I hope that you get value from these videos and that you can leverage them to inspire your KM teams and stakeholders to engage in constructive conversations on how to improve knowledge flow, build trusted relationships and generate social benefits.
Thank you for your participation and interest. A

At times like this, I am thankful to be a part of a solid community of professionals. I am usually gathering and saving all of the insightful information, links, content and question/answers that come from this group that have supported my growth in my current role. Today I am reaching out for support, connections and networking. I am currently a Senior Director of KM at JLL (Jones, Lang LaSalle) managing a group of 10 KM'ers across a piece of our business. The business is hurting and JLL has decided to move ahead with a pretty large headcount reduction that I have now been a part of as of this morning.
I would be happy to have a separate conversation with anyone who has some knowledge around open opportunities. I have attached my most recent copy of my resume and a link to my LinkedIn profile. I welcome any support this community can lend. Thank you in advance, Michelle Pike 216.401.8908 mpike1005@... LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michelle-m-pike-578b003/ |
