One of our Canadian members is looking to educate herself about knowledge management and would like to know the following:
-- Is KM certification a practical way to learn about KM and a good career move? If so, what are the top-rated programs? -- What KM conferences do you recommend? This person is more interested in the collaboration as opposed to the repository side of KM. This list is a great resource in itself, but I wanted to give her other, more formalized sources as well. |

Nancy Settle-Murphy <nancy@...>
Hi everyone,
My favorite author on the topic of employee engagement is Roger D’Aprix. His latest book: The Credible Company: Communicating with Today’s Skeptical Workforce, published earlier this year by Jossey-Bass. I suspect that in the short time since he wrote this book, today’s workforce is every more skeptical, if not cynical. I have read all of his books, starting with The Believable Corporation, which helped launch my career many years ago as an employee communications manager. He is just as relevant today as he was back in the early 80’s, and I value his advice every bit as much as I did when I was just starting out.

Employee Engagement
#engagement
This is one of the topics that my group has been researching over the last year. We conduct best practice research on topics of relevance to public administration. There are many frameworks and models of EE but as the result of our research, we concluded that it could be understood as consisting of Intellectual Engagement, Emotional Engagement and Social Engagement. In terms of resources, I would suggest you look at the Conference Board's research, and CLC's research. A good research study was also conducted for the Scottish public service. In addition, here are some of the monographs we reviewed.
The Human Equation: Building Profits by Putting People First Jeffery Pfeffer; Harvard Business School Press; 1998 Creating Commitment: How to Attract and Retain Talented Employees By Building Relationships That Last Michael O'Malley; John Wiley & Sons; Inc; 2000 Retiring the Generation Gap: How Employees Young and Old Can Find Common Ground Jennifer J. Deal; Jossey-Bass; 2006 The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy, Not Time, is the Key to High Performance and Personal Renewal Jim Loehr; Free Press; 2003 Hot Spots: How Boundaryless Cooperation Fuels Innovation Lynda Gratton; Barrett-Koehler Publishers, Inc.; 2007 Cheers Paul McDowall Acting Director, Best Practices Knowledge Management Advisor Canada School of Public Service |

Re: Employee Engagement

bkarney@...
About 10 years ago I heard a presentation from The Gallup Organization
called "Building a Stronger Workplace: An Integrated Program of Measurement and
Training" that I thought was absolutely brilliant. My employer at the time
did not purchase the program, so I don't have personal experience of it, but
Gallup had been doing work around employee engagement for many years and I was
convinced at the time that we could have gained a LOT of insight if we'd hired
them.
In particular, I was impressed by "The 12 Questions That Matter," which was
a slide that listed 12 statements that correlated with high job
satisfaction and low turnover. The statements, which are proprietary, were
not necessarily ones that I would have thought of. The most interesting
(to me) was # 11: "I have a best friend at work." The other 11 statements
were all things that a good supervisor could do something about, but this one
seemed unusual in that having a good friend at work really DOES improve job
satisfaction (in my experience).
You can find all 12 questions by Googling the title of the slide.

February 2009 SIKM Call: Arthur Shelley - Impacts of behavior on knowledge transfer and project outcomes
#monthly-call
Thank you for your feedback and interest from my SIKM conference call
on using animal metaphor for understanding behavior and building relationships. I had a significant number of email responses after the call which I am working my way through. The two common points of interest have been the Organizational Zoo Character Cards and the behavioral profiler and also how they help behavioral concepts to be constructively dialogued leading to better outcomes. Where I have introduced the concepts, relationships have been enhanced - leading to improved business performance. This also creates an environment where trust can develop and stress reduced, leading to improved knowledge sharing and more interactive people. I will soon have a free and open wiki site operating where "Zoo Ambassadors" can share their success stories and experiences using the tools. You get to use the tools for free, provided you acknowledge where they come from. Have a look at the website as well for useful downloads (more to come soon). The (Free) Zoo Profiler beta site is: http://organizationalzoo.vinaytripathi.com/ Still needs a little work and better instructions, but please let me know what you think. Just add 6 words from the list into each of the 4 categories at the bottom, then run the profile. regards, Arthur www.organizationalzoo.com |

Advice for Presenters at KM Conferences: Vendors
#conferences
Matt Moore <laalgadger@...>
Hello,
I have been prompted by two things: - This post by by Jeremiah Owyang: http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/2009/02/02/translating-vendor-ese-these-are-things-not-to-believe - The rather good Ark conference held in Melbourne last week. I want to put together 3 advice packs (probably in short video format) to enable 3 groups to present better at conferences. These advice packs may even have both educational & entertainment value (but I make no promises). The first target group will be (drum roll please): KM technology vendors If you have ever been a conference participants, I would like to hear from you on: 1. Bad habits / cliches / disasters you have witnesses in vendor presentations (worst practices). 2. Neat / cool / effective things that you have seen (good practices). 3. Things you think vendors should do but don't (novel practices). All contributions will receive the appropriate credit. Cheers, Matt P.S. The other 2 groups will be independent consultants and practitioners. |

KM Job Opportunity: Director, Sharing and Communities of Practice
#jobs
This job came to me from a friend so I don't have any details, but someone may be interested:
The job is fulltime and the location is in SF, NY, or Chicago. If you know anyone who could be a fit, please have them reach out to Sarah Grayson at sarah@....
Director, Sharing and Communities of Practice Organization Overview: Who we are. KIPP is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools with a track record of preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and in life. There are currently 66 KIPP schools in 19 states and the District of Columbia serving over 16,000 students. Eighty percent of our students are low-income, and more than 90 percent are African American or Latino. What we do. KIPP builds a partnership among parents, students, and teachers that puts learning first. By providing outstanding educators, more time in school learning, and a strong culture of achievement, we are focused on helping all of our students climb the mountain to college. And through a strategic, regional growth plan, KIPP plans to expand our network to 100 schools serving 25,000+ students by 2011—impacting the educational outcomes of more students in more underserved communities throughout the country. Why it matters. Every day, KIPP students across the nation are proving that demography does not define destiny. Nationally, more than 80 percent of alumni from the original KIPP Academies have gone on to college. In 2007, 95 percent of our alumni matriculated to college-preparatory high schools—and have earned more than $25 million in scholarships and financial aid since 2000. As we continue to achieve results in our growing network of schools, KIPP is redefining the notion of what is possible in public education. We are committed to sharing all that we learn in an effort to inspire other communities to consider the approach that has made KIPP schools successful. Role Overview: The Research, Design and Innovation team is focused on ensuring that the KIPP network builds upon and sustains its success as the network continues to grow. Sustained, successful growth at quality requires: (1) Understanding our strengths and opportunities in order to continuously improve; (2) Continuing to innovate; (3) Sharing and learning from best and promising practices; and (4) Focusing on talent attraction, retention, and development (a critical factor in ensuring quality growth). Key priorities of the RDI to fulfill its objectives include:
Key Responsibilities: The Director, Sharing and Communities of Practice will lead the charge of creating new learning communities that will serve as a hub for disseminating and sharing this knowledge through creative use of technology and leveraging a multitude of resources at the Foundation and regional level. The Director, Sharing and Communities of Practice will report directly to the Executive Vice President of Research, Design, and Innovation and work closely with the senior management team at KIPP.
QUALIFICATIONS:
OUR VALUES – WHAT WE BELIEVE: Sense of purpose. We are inspired to fulfill a mission larger than ourselves. We are a place for people who enjoy the roles we play in service to our schools and regions. Results. We work hard to deliver supports and services that are truly valuable to our schools and regions and the kids they serve. We are resilient, persisting through obstacles and collaborating across teams in pursuit of solutions. Respect. We appreciate all who are engaged in this challenging work and treat others as we would like to be treated. Constant learning and humility. We seek out and expect regular, constructive feedback, keeping in mind the limitations of our own experience. We recognize that compelling research, data, and personal experience offers us the opportunity to change our practices to best serve our children. Diversity and inclusivity. We are building an organization in which talented individuals from all walks of life and past work experiences can join our team and make significant contributions. We are particularly committed to attracting and developing individuals who share the life experiences or racial backgrounds of our students. Compensation & Benefits: Compensation will be commensurate with experience. Employee benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance, 401K plan, and a significant paid time-off package. |
