Learning programs for KM professionals? #learning

Corinna <misssnooter@...>

Colleagues:

Does anyone have any experience they could share regarding
developing/managing corporate learning programs for KM
professionals? Our team has grown considerably, and we need to
develop a more robust, and structured, learning program for a broad
range of KM roles (researchers, content and taxonomy managers,
business writers, business and financial analysts, community
managers, strategists, etc etc). Ad hoc, personal strategies are no
longer sufficient/cost effective for us. I'd be interested in
hearing which, if any, stand alone educational providers have useful
KM offerings; whether, in your opinion, any of the national
conferences provide reasonable learning opportunities for junior
staff; and generally how others have dealt with the developmental
needs of their KM teams.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
We use a community for our knowledge brokers to share effective KM
practices. They learn from previous experiences that are documented in
the community portal and collaborate with each other. When it comes to
training people in specific KM roles we still do it one person at a
time. Fortunately we have only about 50 people in these roles and
turnover is not very high.

We have a particular challenge in training the large number of new
hires to perform our services at oil wells around the globe. We simply
do not have enough technical trainers. A KM community of trainers was
created to share training materials and practices. We also created a
KM community just for new-hires. They can collaborate freely with
other new hires about training courses and share the learning
experience. Kind of like a study group.

Corinna,

The KM Institute provides the most extensive KM curriculum available anywhere.

KM courses range from short primers (one-to-two days) for those new to KM, to the most robust and proven KM Certification Program available.

Both blended workshops and e-learning modes are available.

More can be seen at our web site.

If you or anyone else has an interest, I can send an advance copy of our newly expanded 2007 Training Directory featuring over 1,000 courses - not appropriate to attach here.

The new programs include both KM Certification and many KM Certificate Programs in diverse KM-related disciplines. This offering includes both workshops, but primarily video e-learning.

A helpful conference for you might be the Eigth Annual e-Gov KM Conference, April 3 - 5, 2007.
Membership in the KM Institute will gain you a substantial discount to e-Gov.

This is what HP's internal KM training site includes.  I believe that external KM conferences (e.g., APQC, Ark Group, KMWorld, Working Knowledge Research Center, KM Clusters, etc.) are valuable for the development of our KM professionals, especially if they give a presentation during the event.

Currently there is no standard new hire training.  In the past, there was such training, and as part of it, we usually had an introductory KM module.

The three regions tend to hold periodic training events which may be mandatory.  For example, when I was the Americas KM Lead, I conducted a KM training webinar with the senior leader of the organization which was mandatory for all managers.
