What are your thoughts on pursuing Knowledge Management certification? Worthwhile? Is there an industry standard certification process? Which certification vendors can you recommend?

Hi Ann
Always a realistic question. My view is it is hard to offer “certification” in a discipline, career field, or practice where there are not yet standards on competence or proficiency, there aren’t continuing education requirements, nor accreditation of the “certification” providers. (Compare to CPA, professional engineer, SHRM, CPCM) Organizations that sell “certification” are essentially selling training aligned with their view of KM. You will find that there are people with no experience or prior expertise in KM attending a “certification” course and being “certified.”
Having said this, there can be value in taking the KM training offered as long as you have context and manage your expectations about the outcome you are pursuing. The KM profession is moving in the right direction through the efforts of dedicated KM professionals in developing ISO standards to which certification can be aligned. That is down the road in time.

I achieved certification through www.KMInstitute.org. I found it to be a great program, reasonable cost, got to interact with 20+ other KM professionals during training, and they have a lot of post-certification resources available. (and, no they aren’t paying me to say this 😊)

The Knowledge Management Institute (http://www.kminstitute.org/) provides a robust Knowledge Management Certification program. This program also has specialist areas where you can also achieve certification. KMI CKM and/or CKS-IA training has been identified as a requirement on many job postings (primarily from the government). This program is being taught in the U.S. and internationally. I think Bill Kaplan reflected the current status very well. The available certification course, gives you a head start and understanding what it is all about and defines concepts or schools of thinking which may help you to specialist in one direction. Fr the 5th year, CCLFI is running a 6 month online KMPractitioners Certification Course. The course runs, based on demand, twice a year with an average participation level of 35 students, private and non-profit- from the 5 continents, We are now running the 12th course with 40 students and the evaluations are very positive. This is also reflected in the fact that some organizations have made this course mandatory for their staff interested to pursue a career in KM. The certificate, if completed is merely a recognition that you the student has completed the theoretical part as well as the practicum which forms an integral part of the course. There is a growing demand for KM courses and I see this also growing in current work for Universities to develop a colloquium, associated with a social or technical study. Daan

I read your article and was curious about the three organizations you listed that offered KM certification at the time you wrote the article. I found that the link to KMCI was to a web page that hasn't been updated in years (the website's banner urges registration for an upcoming CKIM class in 2010) and the link to KMPro no longer worked, leading me to conclude either that the concept of KM certification never quite took off or that KM Institute was the only organization able to make a go of it.
