Community of practice resuscitation attempt #CoP

Miguel Cornejo

Hello Stan, all,

it's been years since I last posted here :-). The years since I was really active in knowledge communities.

Just wanted to say hi, and to tell you about a small experiment. The Macuarium CoP system ( essentially a 140.000-member community for creative professionals based on the mac OS environment ), which I'd been running since 1999 but disengaged with in 2008, had dwindled and eventually closed down in Sept 2017. I've just taken back the helm and relaunched it with the old data and new software, and a mix of old and new in the team.

Any ideas on boosting it back to relevance are welcome :-). We're talking resuscitation here.

Best regards,

Miguel

Stan’s “local km community leaders” group still exists as well, happy to add you and any other cop leaders there, if you’d like? That group has a quarterly call and this would be a great question there as well… The call happens to be this week.

For a more immediate thought, it sounds like the ‘domain’ and the ‘community’ are pretty clear in this case, it sounds like the ‘practice’ is in question? What would success look like for you and the community? What would relevance look like?

Thanks,

John

Yes, I’ve attended a couple of those calls in my time :-). Long ago.

The practice is varied (many subCoPs) but it’s essentially technical methodology sharing and problem solving. Tech support on steroids.

Success... we used to measure it through activity and relevance metrics. Threads started, problems solved, knowledge objects (guides, articles) produced, and the final proof of relevance: traffic.

We reopened on “beta” on the 25th and are getting a tenth of the numbers of back-in-the-day but better than in end-of-2017. Planning on a more splashy official reopening on the 30th. #MacuariumReloaded theme and all :-).

One of the changes is I’m integrating with social networks for dissemination and promotion. We used to shun them as they diverted traffic.

Best regards,

Miguel

Miguel, thanks for posting.  Here are three of my articles which include promoting a community:

Here is a commentary I wrote on one of Stan's posts several years ago. Perhaps useful here.
