Stan -

Only 50 alternative names/labels for KM?  Clearly you're not looking hard enough.

This snarky observation offered from a public Y2K meeting where the project manager of BankBoston offered that he'd been astonished to find 14 different date routines in their systems inventory.

My boss offered: "Must not have been looking very hard."

In 2006 I found 298 meanings for "cc"... today that tally is 400+.

Stan / David, nice numbers.  When GE bought Alstom, it was discovered that Alstom had 62 separate Lessons Learned systems / approaches / databases.  At GE, when I started, we documented 32 separate wikis.  Not wiki articles, wiki platforms.  Numbers can be an interesting way to discuss challenges of many types.  How does this happen?  Lots of reasons...namely, lack of leadership and governance IMHO.  I bet many others can chime in this one.  Dan

Hi Dan
In ActionAid when I did a mapping we had 62 systems too, coincidently that we used for knowledge storage and knowledge sharing. This is not including the websites of ActionAid countries and ActionAid, an International NGO has presence in 45 countries now. It was quite a task to harmonise everything, i adopted the route of a portal, built entirely using OOB SharePoint and managed to harmonise to a great extent. I used widgets, RSS feeds or sometimes just links.

Numbers do tell a story but more than that these numbers convey a strong message of lack of prioritisation of KM in organisations, especially Development organisations like mine.

Regards
Srividya Harish
