Books on AI for KM #books #AI
Dear all,
I hope this email finds you well. I was wondering if you could kindly recommend any newly-published content (books, articles, etc...) on to the use of AI for Knowledge Management. Thank you in advance and best regards, Francesco |

You might check out Lorien Pratt's 2019 book Link. Its focus is on decision intelligence (DI) - using AI to connect data to decision making - but I think its useful knowledge for KM practitioners. The book is light on the "how" of using AI, emphasizing the "why" instead. Here are a couple of relevant quotes: "DI is what KM was supposed to be. Capturing decisions, along with their rationale, is one of the most important aspects of organizational memory. It's also something most organizations are not very good at doing. DI provides a much richer framework from which to make this happen." - Rick Ladd (formerly Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne KM lead [143]) 104 The job of knowledge management (KM) professionals is to ensure that organizational knowledge is available, usable, and up-to-date. Since this knowledge is often used to support decisions, KM and DI are highly complementary. Indeed, from one point of view, DI could be viewed as the subfield of KM that organizes and formalizes all knowledge that is used to make decisions. One of the most important roles of KM is to provide a "sensor network" within an organization to alert to upcoming problems. 104 DI may well be the missing element in KM systems today. Kemp goes on to say that: "KM should curate, make relevant, and draw attention to timely information potentially needed for critical actions. That requires working backwards through a causal chain, providing a culture open to information sharing, and presenting the information in a way that's easily understood. Decision Intelligence is the discipline that provides this solution. As such, it offers a robust platform for KM and for a system capable of blinking red." 105 |

The AI-Powered Enterprise by Seth Earley (2020) deals extensively with ontologies and knowledge management systems. I haven't finished it so can't really speak to its quality.

Andy, I have written several articles and presentations on Knowledge-as-a-Service (KaaS). This framework details how AI powered knowledge is used to deliver accurate and personal knowledge to its users. I have also worked with organizations to leverage this framework through implementing Digital Workplace platforms. Here are the links to the presentations https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyS2wuB1YNw, Knowledge-as-a-Service Knowledge Delivery: The Nature of Knowledge - knowledgemanagementdepot.com, PowerPoint Presentation (disa.mil)
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

My book with Nick Milton “The Knowledge Manager’s Handbook” (2nd ed.) has a chapter on KM and Digital Transformation, where we discuss the opportunities and the constraints of AI/ML for KM. We discuss the areas of KM where AI can work well, and the areas where it generally doesn’t. This is a high level orientation, so you would need to go deeper with some of the books already mentioned. If you are planning to attend the KM World conference in November (7-10) I’m pretty sure there will be some useful sessions there. Patrick
