SNA software: any idea of the investment? #SNA-ONA-VNA
Good morning all,
sorry for the late reply, these months have been intense and the upcoming ones will be as well; and this is positive! :-) @Stan, Rachad and Dan: thank you very much for your availability to organize a peer-assist session. At the moment, doing it is quite challenging for me, but definitively I am super interested and I hope you will be still available later this year (hopefully in the second/third quarter of the year). Keep you all posted and of course thanks again! All the best, Ginetta -- Ginetta Gueli Information & Knowledge Manager | Project Manager |

Dan and Rachad, thanks a lot for offering to help. Please connect with Ginetta and proceed to schedule a session. I appreciate it!

Dan - Thank you for the invitation, I will participate with pleasure and share our experiences on a recent SNA work done for the client.
I do value all the business key behaviors that we could extract from the community members'/ knowledge brokers' interactions. I'm looking forward to the conversation and mutual learning. Thank you Rachad |

Stan - I would be glad to help facilitate or co-faciliate this session with Dennis. Also - Dr. Rachad Najjar is quite strong in this area. I have worked with him recently on some SNA work for a client. If we did it as a fishbowl session - he's one of the "fish" candidates - and we can get others I am sure to help out. We can use my Zoom account and convert the video into a reusable one on YouTube. Glad to help. We have held two previous special sessions, one hosted by Dennis Pearce and one by Dan Ranta. To hold a similar one, just post here with the details. You can either use the conference call logistics we use for the monthly calls or your own Zoom or equivalent link. |

Eugene, Patrick and Jennilyn,
thank you very much for your extra insights and suggestions, definitively useful! Yes Eugene, I will share my experience about Polynode if I will test it and maybe @SIKM Leaders all, we might have a sort of "Peer Assist" on next year; just to chit-chat practically about our experiences and related expectations, disappointments, best practices and lesson learned? What do you think? Have we ever done a session like this on this topic? Apologies, if forget that we did it in the past... All the best and keep in touch. Ginetta, One of the tools I've found (but haven't tested) is Polynode. Please share your feedback if you'll be testing it, specifically in comparison to the good-old Gephi. Dear SIKM friends, |

In addition to the book mentioned by Patrick Lambe. I also found the following two books to be helpful from a practical standpoint in using the tools: Hanneman, R. A., & Riddle, M. (2005). Introduction to Social Network Methods. Retrieved from http://faculty.ucr.edu/~hanneman/nettext/index.html Networks with NodeXL. Morgan Kaufmann. |

Hello Eugene,
I am fascinating about SNA as well, and I think that it would solve a lot of "pain points" in a KM journey, but it is true that it encompass so many factors to be taken into consideration before spending time and money on it... Thank you for sharing your experience with me/us and for your list of food for thoughts: definitely good ones! Hi Ginetta - Rob Cross’ book with Andrew Parker - The Hidden Power of Social Networks - is a must read for how to use SNA responsibly and effectively, and some of the potential pitfalls (a) around not understanding what it is you are looking at in a map and (b) potential for bias if the enquiry is poorly scoped.

Interesting insights Tom. I am wondering if you can share more about your experience in applying it in a business setting? What are the big challenges and the pain points? What potential pitfalls does the implementation of an SNA tool, for example, hide?
Thanks for sharing! All the best, Ginetta -- Ginetta Gueli Information & Knowledge Manager | Project Manager |

thank you for the answer and the links about your company. Let me investigate a bit more, we are at the begin of the KM journey. All the best, Ginetta |

Good morning Jennilyn,
thank you for your suggestions; indeed I did not know those sources. I will investigate more. All the best, Ginetta -- Ginetta Gueli Information & Knowledge Manager | Project Manager |

Ginetta:
On the academic side, the commercial one I see most referenced when reading journal articles is UCINET. Their site says $150 govt/$250 commercial, but they offer volume and site discounts and have a 90 day trial period: https://sites.google.com/site/ucinetsoftware/home I have used the open source versions of NodeXL Basic (https://www.smrfoundation.org/nodexl/installation/) and EgoWeb 2.0 https://www.qualintitative.com/egoweb/ where I found the creator David Kennedy to be super responsive to questions/issues. Hello Ginetta,
We have software and training/mentoring for it. We have trained over 1000 consultants, and inside the organization experts, on how to use SNA/ONA with their other projects/goals. Hello Ginetta, I've been looking for proper software in this area for some time. Still, I haven't found anything better than a bright mind (read "consultant") + specific software (think of Gephi or Python+specific libraries, depending on a situation and objectives). Other market-available solutions seem to cover a very specific (or, vice versa, too wide) range of needs. However (as probably always) the choice would depend on the following: - the company/project sponsor's tolerance towards spending, with CAPEX/OPEX balances; - digitalisation agenda and, maybe, inclusion in some related programmes; - the preferred balance between custom and off-the-shelf software; - internal IT architecture folks getting ready to add some software to their portfolio; - the preferred balance between rolling up their sleeves and finding an internal expert for that project (oh, my! :D), and spending on external services; - and even objectives for building up their IP to improve the company's valuation. P.S.: thanks for raising this topic - I'm also very interested in it, but haven't seen a solution yet. |

Have you googled around to see what's out there? I hired a former IBM colleague of mine, Rob Cross, to do an SNA for a client engagement I was working on. He did a great job. He's now a prof (UVA, maybe?). Stan has a good writeup about Rob and his work. You might ask Rob for some thoughts. I don't know how good the current software is, but my recollection from the project I did is that SNA is not a "roll your own" solution unless you have some expertise in SNA. Not just theory of it, but actually applying it in a business setting. Tom Short Consulting All of my previous SIKM Posts |

Dear SIKM friends,
I am writing a KM strategy and related implementation plan for a company who I personally believe is in needs of a SNA tool. My idea is to suggest some of the available software on the market and looking into the SIKM Leaders thread I read an interesting one on the topic. However, the company seems more interested to buy the license of a product instead of having an open source software, and I tend to agree. According to your experience, which company/tool I should look for having an idea of what's available on the market? And always based on your experience, do you have an idea of the investment in €/$ for a company with more than +100 employees? Thank you very much for your knowledge sharing and looking forward to hearing from you. All the best, Ginetta -- Ginetta Gueli Information & Knowledge Manager | Project Manager |
