Tools to support Social Network Analysis (SNA) projects #SNA-ONA-VNA

Raquel Balceiro

Hello everyone,

I hope you're alright. Do you recommend any tools to support projects
that focus on Social Network Analysis or Value Networks?
I'd appreciate your suggestions.

Dear Raquel,
I have in the past used the software developed by Valdis Krebs. A quick google search will help you to see the kinds of projects he’s been involved with in the past. Valdis can be reached at valdis@... and his website is at http://orgnet.com . In the past his advice was really valuable to me. I used his software app for SNA analysis about 5 years ago on a Windows platform. I am not sure if his software is working on the most recent Apple OS.

Best wishes,

Shawn

Hi Raquel,

I'm partial to Kumu. It's free for public graphs (reasonably priced for private graphs), and it's handy for all sorts of system mapping applications in addition to SNA. Here's a Kumu blog post on the SNA functionality and a more detailed look at the various metrics that are inherent in the application.

Take care,
Andrew

Hi Raquel,

I used gephi for analyzing and visualizing the expert network in a specific domain. The tool is open source and relatively easy to use.

Please let us know which tool you decided to proceed with and your experiences.

Cheers,
Grazyna

Hi Rachel,
you might want to contact GuruScan (https://guruscan.nl/). The company is owned by a brilliant KMer Bart Verheijen (https://www.linkedin.com/in/bart-verheijen-3855193/). If you want I can create the connection. Just le me know, maybe with a private message, so I see it immediately in my email address.

All the best,
Ginetta

Hi Rachel,
I use ONASurveys to manage the data collection and Gephi for the data visualisation and stats.
All the best,

Hi Rachel, I’d second all the tools mentioned so far and I would add in nodeXL and ucinet/netdraw.

Thanks,
John

Hello Raquel,

We have been doing applied/practical social network analysis [SNA] in organizations of all sizes, around the world, for 30 years.  This article of mine seems to be the most popular amongst folks wanting to understand what is possible with SNA in business organizations.

More articles that share our experience with organizational networks are available here: http://orgnet.com/stories.html

In addition to network science we have always taken a complex systems and knowledge management/diffusion view of intra/inter-organizational networks.  I would gladly discuss your project if you would like.

Shawn,

Thanks for the kind words!

Good morning everyone.

Thank you so much for the many suggestions. I will study in depth and evaluate each of them.
Let me tell you a little about the project. We identified a difficulty in the adoption of internal procedures that had been reviewed and we realized, through some focus groups, that the issue could be related to some informal leadership. We internally surveyed who these leaders were and developed a solution to bring them close to the project.

Revisiting this result and producing a lesson learned report of the project, we decided to research the tools available in the market. Thus, we can gain effectiveness in the next opportunities.
If necessary for my evaluation, I will definitely contact you to learn more about the suggested tools.

Thank you very much to all. Greetings.

Raquel:

I second John's post on NodeXL and I know some people who have used Gephi.

For my dissertation, I collected data via EgoWeb (https://www.qualintitative.com/egoweb/) which is free and open source.

I'll be interested to hear what route you went and why.

Take a look at Polinode:

it’s fairly easy to use.
